Some suspected members of a notorious cult group, identified as Icelanders, has shot and killed a soldier attached to the headquarters of the special security outfit, Operation Delta Safe in Bayelsa State.
The incident happened around 2 a.m. on Friday, July 23, few meters away from the headquarters of the Operation Delta Safe, along the Igbogene axis of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.
As of the time of filing this report, the reason for killing the solider could not be ascertained but a source said it was not unconnected with an alleged but undisclosed deal that went bad.
The deceased soldier, who is yet to be identified, was a Corporal by rank and was also personnel of the 16 Brigade of the Nigerian Army detailed to the Special Security outfit.
A security source who confirmed the incident to our correspondent said the deceased soldier was shot at close range but could not explain where he was going to at that odd time of the day.
A member of the Igbogene community claimed to have heard the assailants making a call to the deceased solider to come out from the Operation Delta Safe headquarters which he did, thinking they were people he knew.
The source said: “They (the suspected cultists), called him on phone and when he got close to them, they opened fire on him and they zoomed off while he was left in a pool of his own blood. The way it happened it seems they had known one another for a while but we cannot explain what really happened”.
The killing of the soldier has heightened tension in the community as many people are now considering moving out of the area for fear of any reprisal attack.
No official statement has been released by the special security outfit on the incident but it was learnt that colleagues of the deceased are very unhappy over his death.
