Sensational singer, Timi Dakolo was born on January 20, 1981 in Ghana. He was born to a Nigerian father from Bayelsa and Ghanaian mother, Norah, who passed on when he was just 13 years old.
Timi was raised by his grandmother and aunt in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he started singing at the age of 12 in the church choir.
He was one of the founding members of the singing group, “Purple Love” but it was disbanded in 2005 when all its members gained admission into the University of Port Harcourt. Timi read Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt.
He shot to fame after he emerged winner of the inaugural season of Idols West Africa in 2007. Dakolo auditioned for the West Africa Idols in 2006 in Calabar and greatly impressed the judges. He performed remarkably well, and during the final three weeks of the reality show, the judges revealed that he had the highest number of votes in each of those weeks.
However, during the competition, he received news of his grandmother’s death. This came as a big emotional blow to him and he drew strength from his Christian faith to help him pull through the competition.
He won the competition. Accompanying his victory was a recording contract with Sony BMG, in addition to other prizes.
After winning Idol West Africa in 2007, on January 1, 2008, on New Year’s Day, Timi Dakolo was shot at the lobby of the Presidential Hotel in Port Harcourt where he was billed to attend a church service.
It was later discovered that he was not the target of the attack, but it was a random shooting by a faction of then Niger Delta militants. He was rushed to the hospital, treated and discharged the same day. Sadly, a hotel security guard lost his life during the attack.
Timi Dakolo released his first single comprising three songs in October 2009 and in 2011, he released the song “There’s a Cry”. He is currently signed with Lone Records/Now Muzik.
He is known across Nigeria and the world for some of his mega songs like, “Iyawo mi”, “Medicine”, “Wish me Well”, “The Vow” and “Everything (Amen)”.
Dakolo released a Christmas album titled “Merry Christmas, Darling” featuring guest duets such as Emeli Sandé and Kenny G in November 2019 which became a worldwide hit.
In the 2010 Headies, he was nominated as the Hip Hop World Revelation of the Year, and in 2015 as the Best Recording of the Year, for the song, “Wish Me Well”.
Timi Dakolo got married to his multi-talented photographer wife, Busola Dakolo in 2012 and they have three children. The Dakolos have had their fair share of negative and positive press.
But despite the negative press, especially arising from the rape saga involving his wife, Timi Dakolo has continued to be an outstanding and impressive voice, thrilling the world with his unique kind of music. He remains a household favourite in Nigeria.ç
