The Imo State Police Command has disclosed that the pregnant woman, who was stabbed by a young man at Nekede Community in Owerri West Local Government Area of the state is still alive but unconscious.
Reports had claimed that the pregnant woman, who was stabbed on the stomach on Sunday, June 19, 2022 by a young man, Ifeanyi Chikere Okoro of No. 4 Bus-stop Area, Old Nekede Road Owerri died on the spot.
But in statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Michael Abattam, the police disclosed that Sandra Onyema of same address with her attacker was still alive and is receiving medical care at a Catholic hospital in Ikenegbu Layout Owerri.
Abattam also disclosed that the police patrol teams dispatched by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Umuguma Divisional Police Headquarters upon receipt of information about the incident rescued the young man from being lynched by an irate mob.
He however said the irate mob had dealt several machete cuts on the attacker before the arrival of the police team, adding that the young man was immediately rushed to the Police Medical Centre, Owerri where he is receiving treatment.
According to the police spokesman, Okoro was rushed to the intensive care unit of the police medical facility after two renowned hospitals had shunned treating him.
The police image-maker also revealed that Onyema is not pregnant.
His statement reads; “Sequel to a report that, on 19/6/2022 at about 1020 hours, a young man, Ifeanyi Chikere Okoro ‘m’ of No. 4 Bus Stop Area, Old Nekede road Owerri, stabbed a pregnant woman, Mrs. Sandra Onyema ‘f’ of the same address, in the stomach and she died on the spot and irate mob were about lynching the young man.
“The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Umuguma Divisional Police Headquarters Owerri, immediately dispatched two police patrol teams to the scene. Unfortunately, before their arrival, the irate mob who were in their numbers, had inflicted several machete cuts of various degrees on the suspect, Ifeanyi Chikere Okoro, threatening to lynch him, when they were stopped by the police operatives, after several persuasive pleas.
“The police operatives who were professional in their conduct, on rescuing the suspect from the hands of the irate mob, hastily took him to Police Medical Centre Owerri, after being rejected by two renowned hospitals. He is presently on admission in the intensive care unit of the hospital receiving treatment.
“Meanwhile, the said pregnant woman whom the irate mob presumed dead is alive but unconscious receiving treatment in Holy Family Hospital, Ikenegbu Owerri, Imo State. More so, she is not pregnant”.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP, Mohammed Ahmed Barde has commended the officers and men for their timely intervention.
He condemned the action of the irate mob, stressing that it is barbaric and unacceptable in law.
