The National Union of Izon-Ibe Students (NUIS) has appealed to Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri to assist them financially to conduct their annual convention scheduled to hold between July 23 and 25, 2021.
The students said their public appeal has become inevitable after exhausting all avenues to solicit for the needed funds for the convention through the relevant educational authorities.
The National President of NUIS, Comrade Duoduo Simeon Ebimene in a statement at the weekend alleged that they have been abandoned by the government despite the clear role they played in favour of Governor Diri during the last governorship election.
He said aside the convention all other appeals for assistance from the Prosperity Administration have fallen on deaf ears and asked the governor to correct the situation to enable them organize the three-day convention in Bomadi, Delta State.
The statement read: “With all due respect we convey our disappointment and discontent with your administration on the way your government has treated us with ignominy.
“It is on record that the Izon-Ibe Student Community played critical roles in enthroning your administration. We gave our all to ensure that we protect the mandate despite the great offers and financial inducements from the opposition to abandon the prosperity agenda.
“Sir, we write to you as our last resort after we have exhausted all other avenues with the appropriate bodies that have to do with educational affairs, all yielded no positive results.
“Sir, our Izon-Ibe Students Convention is fast approaching and billed to hold from 23rd to 25th July 2021 in Bomadi LGA of Delta State. It is surprising to note that no form of encouragement has come from the government.”
Comade Ebimene added that Bayelsa is the only Izon homogenous state and the Jerusalem of the Ijaw Nation, saying that is why the students constantly organize conventions and seminars to educate themselves as they are future leaders.
According to him, the students are using the medium to appeal for the approval of funds in order to enable them have a successful convention.
“Your Excellency sir, on our first meeting with you the student community, which comprises National Union of Izon-ibe Student (NUIS), National Union of Bayelsa State Students (NUBSS) and National Association of Nigeria Students Bayelsa State Chapter (NANS JCC) made some demands and also applied for buses to enable us navigate to communities to keep the enlightenment of our students going.
“But some of these demands have not come into existence (sic) as promised by the government. The lackadaisical conduct, is painting the government in bad light to the students community that the government isn’t student-friendly and also making the student community feel is not our right to enjoy patronage from the government but the student community will mobilize enormously for the government when we are called upon.
“That means the government will not do anything to favour the community that is not of their own interest. We know that is a negative theory as you have supported the Izon students privately and also in other position you found yourself before becoming our Governor. We appeal to you to approve our demands.
“It is on this note, we look forward to getting a favourable response from you that will gladden our hearts and enable us host a very successful and credible Izon-ibe Students Convention”, he stated.
