An Oyo State High Court, sitting in Ibadan and presided over by Justice Ladiran Akintola today granted all the sixteen (16) Reliefs sought by a Yoruba Nation Activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, through his Counsel, Yomi Aliu, SAN, in a case of fundamental human rights violation and also awarded an additional N2million (two million Naira) in favour of Sunday Igboho against the respondents jointly.
The Court further awarded N20billion (twenty billion Naira) aggravated damages against the Federal Government of Nigeria, FGN, and the Department of State Services, DSS.
Recall that it was alleged that the Department of State Security, DSS, invaded the residence of Sunday Igboho situate at Soka, Ibadan, Oyo State in the early hours of Thursday July 1, 2021.
Consequently, Sunday Igboho had, through his counsel, approached the court and demanded the sum of N500billion (five hundred billion Naira) as reparation for damage to his exotic cars that include Mercedes Benz G-Class and 2019 Lexus Car during the invasion of his residence.
The presiding Judge further demanded a public apology on the destruction of Sunday Igboho’s property as well as an investigation into the action(s) of the joint security operatives that raided Sunday Adeyemo’s house, which was led by the Department of State Services, DSS, during which two persons were killed by the security operatives.
Reacting to the judgement after the court session, the counsel to Sunday Igboho, Yomi Aliu, SAN, described the judgment as a victory for democracy. However, Abdullahi Abubakar, Counsel to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, representing the Federal Government of Nigeria, refused to grant any interview.
The three respondents are Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, as the first respondent, as well as the Department of State Security, DSS, as second respondent and Director of DSS in Oyo State as third respondent.
