The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Friday arrived Porto Novo, Benin Republic ahead of their AFCON qualifying game against the Squirrels of Benin at the Stade Charles de Gaulle on Saturday.
The Gernot Rohr’s men who travelled by sea to the neighboring West African country, were recieved by a delegation of Nigerian officials and some fans.
Officials confirmed their arrival on the team’s twitter handle: “We have arrived in Porto Novo. We also had our mandatory Covid test done at the point of entry. We’ve settled in and lodged at the Golden Tulip Le Diplomat Hotel in Cotonou”.
The decision to travel by sea was taken in order to help the team avoid the heavy traffic in Lagos if they were to travel by road, following the non availability of flights, caused by a ban on all flights from Nigeria.
The three-time African champions will also return to the country by boat on Sunday before hosting Lesotho at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, three days later.
Nigeria lead Group L with eight points from four games and victory over Benin will seal their place at the biennial tournament in Cameroon in January.
