Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State on Tuesday has confirmed that there was an attack on Abagena (IDPs) camp in Makurdi the capital of Benue state by suspected herdsmen, which left about seven persons reportedly dead and lots of others injured.
The Governor in a statement said he visited the camp, where the internally displaced persons were protesting the attack by mounting roadblocks along the Makurdi-Lafia road.
Ortom said that the attacks have become very unbearable and unacceptable. He further stated that over 70 persons were killed in Guma, Makurdi, and Gwer West Local Government Areas respectively just within the last two weeks.
“Over 70 persons have being killed in Guma, Makurdi, and Gwer West LGAs alone, I want to state here we have ran out of patience in spite of our preaching of rule of law and due process.”
Ortom further urged President Muhammadu Buhari who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, to take full action and responsibility for the security challenges the country is going through at the moment.
He went ahead to call on other governors to stand up and impress on Muhammadu Buhari to properly address the country over the ongoing insecurity challenges in the country.
In his words, “Mr President must rise up; he is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He has taken oath of office to secure and protect lives and property.
“This (attack) is not acceptable, this cannot continue. Mr President must rise up and address the nation.
“My colleagues, the governors must rise and impress on the President to call a security submit, if possible to declare a state of emergency on security so that all hands will be on deck to address the situation in the country’”, he said.
