The Executive Chairman of Etche Local Government Area, Hon. Obinna Anyanwu JP has donated food items as palliatives to the Internally Displaced Persons affected by a recent crude spill from a fallen tanker in Afara Ward 01 community.
He also assured them of timely resettlement
The tanker-bearing petroleum product fell and spilled its content into several compounds at the Umuokorougwu axis of the Afara-Mba road thereby forcing the residents to vacate their homes for safety.
Emergency officials from the Rivers State Ministry of Special Duties were quick to prevent further havoc at the contaminated areas and averted what could have resulted in a fire disaster following a distress call from the office of the Etche council chairman.
Presenting the donation when he visited the IDP camp at state school in Afara, the chairman said he was saddened by the development which had deprived the people of their shelters and properties for a week.
Anyanwu said the items will serve as a palliative measure for the people affected pending relocation to their homes.
The council chairman while sympathizing with the victims, assured them that he would continue to liaise with the Rivers State ministries of Special Duties and Energy to ensure that they were safely resettled.

Chief of Umuokorougwu village in Afara ward 01 community, Hezekiah Nwamegbulem, who received the items on behalf of the victims, thanked the chairman for coming to their aid.
He assured the chairman of judicious use of the items.
“According to him, the gesture was a testimony to Anyanwu’s kind nature and readiness to always support his people.
Also, some elated women, said Anyanwu has lived up to his title as the father of the local government area.
The palliatives include food items such as Rice, Tomato pastes, Noodles, Salt, Vegetable Oil, and other edibles.
