Bayelsa State Government has imposed a dusk to dawn curfew in Bassambiri and Ogbolomabiri in Nembe Local Government Area of the state, effective from today (Wednesday), July 14, 2021.
This is due to the recent violence that has rocked both communities which led to the killing of a youth, by yet-to-be identified gunmen.
Executive Chairman of Nembe Local Government Council, Hon. Alalibo West while on a condolence visit to the family of the deceased condemned the attack in strong terms, describing it as barbaric and unfortunate.
He called for calm in the area while deliberating with the council of Chiefs, security agencies and other stakeholders on ways to restore peace, saying the government will do its best to bring the situation under control.
On Wednesday, the Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Hon. Ayibaina Duba, in a statement, disclosed that the curfew will be in force from 6pm to 6am daily until the security situation in the affected communities improves.
He also stated that relevant security formations have been mobilised to enforce the curfew and residents of the area are advised to comply in their own interest.
The Commissioner implored residents and aggrieved individuals in the area to allow peace reign by seeking alternative and civilized methods to resolve whatever might have caused the unfortunate incident.
In another development, the Chairman of the Council, Hon. Alalibo West has relieved political appointees of their appointments, with immediate effect. No reason was given for the sack.
He listed the affected political appointees to include the Political Secretary of the Council, Supervisory Councillors, Special Advisers and personal aides.
The council boss directed the affected appointees to hand over all documents of the council in their possession to the Head of Personnel Management in the Local Government, and thanked them for their contributions to the Council and equally wished them well in their future endeavours.
