Justice Eno Isangedighi of Akwa Ibom State high court, Ikot Ekpene has on Friday, July, 16, 2021 sentenced two police officers in the state alongside three others to death for Kidnapping.
The condemned were said to have kidnapped one, Alhaji Muhammad Umar Barkindo, a cattle dealer who based in Uyo, the state capital.
It was gathered that the trial started since the year 2011 and the officers involved have since been dismissed from service.
The Police officers were corporal Friday Udo, a native of Ikot Inyang and Corporal Saturday Okorie of Ikot Etenge all in Oruk Anam Local Government Area of the state.
The other three condemned to death were Walter Jack Udo, a native of Iwok Nsit in Nsit Atai, Udo Moses Akpaetuk of Ikot Ada Idem, Ibiono Ibom and Udo Okon Etim from Ikot Asua in Nsit Atai.
They were said to have provided their house to keep the victim, while demanding one hundred million Naira ransom.
It was further gathered that total of eight persons were apprehended in connection with the kidnapping but three died in custody. This made their names to be struck out by the court.
Delivering her judgment, Justice Isangedighi held that, “the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubts and found the accused guilty of conspiracy and kidnapping Alhaji Muhammad Umar Barkindo on 25th November, 2011, an offense punishable by death in Section one subsection two of Akwa Ibom State Internal Security and Enforcement Law 2009.”
The Justice however prayed God to have mercy upon the souls of the condemned kidnappers.
Meanwhile, the judgement had laid to rest the 10 years trial of the 8-man squad who were also linked to the kidnap of a medical expert at the University of Uyo, Dr. Ini Enang.
Enang was abducted in August, 2011, but the case was struck out as the Court discharged and acquitted the accused for want of evidence.
