On Tuesday, the Ugandan government reported that there were deliberations on permitting Afghan refugees into the country due to the Taliban dominating Afghanistan at present; a large number of civilians have fled Afghanistan due to the presence of the Taliban.
President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has disclosed their willingness to welcome Afghan refugees and make provisions for accommodating these people; even though the foreign ministry explained that deliberations are still being processed.
Reports also have it that Uganda which has already housed the largest number of refugees in the entire African continent has also consented to take in an estimate of two thousand Afghan refugees.
For the sake of accommodating refugees evacuating Afghanistan for the meantime, the US had reached out to partner countries in the quest to show support to refugees who left Afghanistan out of fear of the Taliban’s control.
According to the United Nations, at present, Uganda houses an estimated 1.5 million refugees which happen to be the hugest number of refugees in the world. Most of these refugees came from close countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.
A large number of the refugees living in Uganda live in the north which is hardly populated while about 81 thousand live in the capital city, Kampala.
There are reports that a country like Uganda with open arms to refugees is grossly underfunded by the international body seeing to it that countries who host refugees should be appropriately funded.
According to Esther Anyakun, a minister in Uganda, about 500 fleeing refugees were expected in Kampala on Tuesday.
