Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo will today, April 6, 2021, declare the 20th National Sports Festival open, on behalf of President Mohammed Buhari.
He will visit the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, to pay homage before proceeding to the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. Osinbajo is also expected to inaugurate some of the state-of-the-art facilities put on display by the Edo State Government.
According to the programme of events released to newsmen, the two-hour opening ceremony will feature a display of the rich cultural heritage of the Bini people, while popular musician, Fire Boy is expected to thrill the crowd.
The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare will address the athletes while the Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki will formally receive the contingents.
As part of measures to ensure strict compliance with Covid-19 guidelines, entry into the stadium for the opening ceremony will be restricted, with access strictly by invitation while states are allowed only 20 athletes.
Meanwhile Team Delta are topping the medals table with 12 gold comprising seven nicked from swimming, two each from cycling and judo and one in Taekwando.
