Many people want to spend a lot of time working, working and working just so they could rest or live their lives later and that is why they have planned a certain period of their lives to retire. Have you also thought about working and living your life?
Instead of focusing solely on your career or that which gives you financial independence or probably building castles and storing golds in the vault, hoping to enjoy them later and miss the opportunity of enjoying the true essence of life, you can decide to work and live. It’s called balancing.
A story was told by Stephen in academictips.org about a father who worked so hard to support his wife and three children. He spent all his evenings attending classes after work, hoping to improve himself so that he could get a better paying job. As a result of this, he never had time for his family.
He worked and studied very hard because he wanted to provide his family with the best money could buy.
Whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he would explain to them that he was doing all these for them. Although, he really wanted to spend more time with his family.
Eventually, the examination results were announced, he passed, and with distinctions too! Soon after, he was offered a good job with a high pay as a senior supervisor.
The dreams of their father was gradually coming to pass as he could now afford to provide his family with life’s little luxuries like nice clothing, fine food and vacation abroad.
However, the family still did not get to see their father for most of the weeks. He worked so hard hoping to be promoted. He also got that for himself. He worked harder and enrolled himself further to progress with his educational career.
Again, whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he would still remind them that he was doing all these for them.
After several promotions, further studies and hard works, life was far better for his family. The wife got someone to assist her with domestic chores, children got into better schools. Their father bought a bigger house that was well furnished.
On the first Sunday evening at their new home, their Father declared to his family that he has decided not to take anymore courses or pursue any more promotions. He assured them that he was going to devote more time to his family.
Unfortunately, their Father never woke up the next day.
Life indeed is unpredictable; you never know what tomorrow has in mind. Obviously, the man had good intentions for himself and his family but he also forgot that he had no control of his life. While it is good to gather and prepare for the future, it is better to learn to balance the things of life.
Love passionately when you can, give when you have to, create time for yourself and family, enjoy every moment that comes your way and finally live while you work.
