Widow of 42-year-old Mr. Oguchi Unachukwu, who was allegedly murdered by an Airforce officer in Imo State, Mrs. Ijeoma Unachukwu, has petitioned the state Commissioner of Police, Abutu Yaro, requesting he uses his good office to bring the culprit to book.
Mr. Oguchi Unachukwu, who was based in Hamburg, Germany was headed to the Sam Mbakwe Airport on Monday, May 31 to catch a flight to Lagos preparatory to catching a Germany-bound flight same day when he was shot on the forehead at point blank range by an operative of the Airforce at the airport checkpoint.
He was conveyed thereafter by the Airforce team in its van first to the Naval Hospital on Aba-Owerri Road and later to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri where he was confirmed dead.
In the petition dated June 1 and signed by Barr. Ihediohanma Akponye, Mrs. Unachukwu disclosed that she witnessed the incident having driven in same vehicle with her husband when the fatal shot hit his forehead.
According to her, her husband was shot by the trigger-happy Airforce officer in an unprovoked execution style in front of her and their two innocent children who were also in the vehicle at the time of the incident.
She noted that before reaching the Airport checkpoint, they had passed three other military and police checkpoints which cleared and passed them on.
Mrs. Unachukwu stated that the Airforce officer had no genuine reason to shoot at her husband after he had stopped and cleared for checks after being flagged down.
Briefing newsmen in Owerri on Wednesday, Barr. Akponye disclosed that the petition had been copied to the state governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma and authorities of the Airforce as well as the Sam Mbakwe Airport.
Akponye insisted that if no punishment is meted out to the officer who fired the lethal shot, he would go about committimg more heinous crimes.
Mr. Oguchi Unachukwu, a vibrant and dashing young man who had lived in Germany for over 20 years had returned to Nigeria last March to dedicate his second child.
He hailed from Umuomumu Umueze Mbieri Autonomous Community in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.
