The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it has commenced an aggressive mission to rescue Nigeria.
This was the position of four PDP governors on Thursday in Ondo town, headquarters of Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State after a close-door meeting with the immediate past governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko, and the governorship candidate of ZLP in the last election and immediate past Deputy Governor, Hon Agboola Ajayi, to the opposition party.
The governors are: Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State.
Speaking with Journalists after meeting with Mimiko and his supporters, the governor of Sokoto State and Chairman of PDP governor’s forum, Aminu Tambuwal said: “We are here in Ondo town, the resident of our leader, Olusegun Mimiko to re-invite him back to his political family, PDP and as you can see we have governors from Rivers, Oyo and Abia states and we have had a robust engagement with him.
“We are very hopeful that we are going to have positive response from him soonest. Our message is simple, let us come back together to reposition the PDP towards rescuing Nigeria now.
On the 2023 general elections, Tambuwal said, “we are to reposition the country and to ensure that PDP is back to the power in 2023.”
Responding, Mimiko said, “This is one of the series of interactions we had over two months ago and they have come at least to convince us why we should come back to join forces with them in PDP.
“We have listened to them, we will go back to our stakeholders meeting because it is them, stakeholders that will decide before we will take our decision on it.”
Mimiko is expected to formally declare his defection immediately after meeting with stakeholders and his supporters.
Supporters of Mimiko including former member of Representatives, Joseph Akinlaja, former speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Jumoke Akindele, former Chief of Staff, Kola Ademujimi, former Chairman of PDP, Clement Faboyede among others were present.
The present Chairman of PDP in the state, Fatai Adams was present at the event but Mimiko’s former ally and candidate of PDP in the last Governorship election in the state, Eyitayo Jegede SAN was absent.
Recall that Mimiko first decamped from AD to PDP in 2003 and then from PDP to LP in 2006 before decamping back to PDP in 2014 and then to LP in 2016.
This will make it the third time he would join the PDP.
Mimiko who had served as the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, is returning to the party after his failed bid to ensure his ally, Agboola Ajayi who was the Deputy Governor under the incumbent Rotimi Akeredolu lost the October, 2020 gubernatorial election in the state.
The two-term governor formed the ZLP in 2019, and used the platform to contest the senatorial election, which he lost to the candidate of PDP, Dr. Ayo Akinyelure.
