On an Australian beach in New South Wales, a young surfer died after his arm was chopped off by a shark on Sunday.
While swimming off Emerald beach in Coffs Harbor, the surfer, in his late twenties was attacked, and his arm chopped off.
He was heard screaming out “Help me,” some heroic residents gathered on the scene and performed CPR on him before paramedics arrived.
Inspector Chris Wilson of NSW ambulance described the young man’s arm being chopped off and the incident as dreadful.
The paramedic stuttered,
A male in his late 20s had serious injuries to his upper torso, which has led in major br — I can’t even say that.’
This morning on the beach, it was a disaster for everyone. ‘A number of local surfers and passer-by ran to his help; they were really brave in a very difficult circumstance. ‘I saw a lady run down… everyone was yelling to get out of the water,’ one witness told 9News.
As paramedics fought valiantly to recover the surfer in a make shift ICU unit on the sand, a chopper lowered an emergency doctor on the beach but despite their valiant efforts, the young man died at the spot from his injuries.
A surfer who claimed to have witnessed the incident said he heard terrible screams and saw a man without an arm covered in blood.
He further told the Courier Mail that the deceased was shouting “help me” while people tried to bring him out to the sea shore. He also witnessed paramedics performing CPR on him for approximately an hour and half in an attempt to save him.
The keen surfer stated the horrible scenes frightened him and that he didn’t intend to return to the popular beach for a long time.
‘A critical care medical team was winched to the beach by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to continue treatment,’ Inspector Wilson said. “The patient sustained a serious arm injury, but despite the best efforts of bystanders, paramedics, and other emergency services, the patient was unable to be revived.”
The beach will be shut down for the next 48 hours as police patrol the area.
