The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared the suspension of its Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, by the Abia State chapter as unconstitutional and without merit.
Reacting to the decision, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, stated that the suspension lacked legal backing and violated the PDP constitution.
The NWC emphasized that the Abia chapter had no authority to take such action against Wabara, who, as a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC), is protected from disciplinary measures at the state level.
Ologunagba described the suspension as “null and void,” citing Section 57(7) of the PDP constitution (as amended in 2017), which explicitly states that no executive committee, apart from the NEC, has the power to discipline NEC members, deputy governors, or members of the National Assembly. He stressed that the Abia chapter had overstepped its jurisdiction by attempting to sanction Wabara.
“The NWC categorically dismisses the purported suspension as having no effect whatsoever. It is inconsistent with the provisions of our party’s constitution and established rules,” Ologunagba said.
He further warned that those responsible for this unconstitutional act should reconsider their actions, as the NWC would not hesitate to take disciplinary measures to maintain the stability of the party and uphold its constitution.
The PDP leadership urged members and stakeholders in Abia State, the Southeast, and across Nigeria to disregard the announcement.
The controversy arose after Abia PDP Chairman, Abraham Amah, announced Wabara’s suspension for alleged anti-party activities. Amah stated that Wabara had been suspended for one month pending the outcome of an investigation by a seven-member disciplinary committee.
Amah stated that the party could not allow itself to be derailed by individuals who claim allegiance to it but fail to uphold its core values, as well as those who readily compromise, undermine, and betray the principles it represents.
He stated that genuine leadership and progress depend on a committed and loyal team, not just numbers. The PDP needs individuals who recognize the sacrifices required to rebuild the party for electoral victory and drive the transformation of Abia State.
While presenting a motion, which was seconded by the State Organizing Secretary, Obinna Okey, the State Treasurer proposed that the BoT Chairman be barred from holding any party position and also suspended from his role as BoT Chairman.
