Agbazuere: Abia Monarchs Received N7,000 Monthly Under Ikpeazu

Anthony Agbazuere, Former Chief of Staff to ex-Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, has revealed that traditional rulers in Abia State were receiving a meager monthly stipend of just N7,000 during the administration he served.

Speaking during the Ehi La Uguru Day celebration on Tuesday, Agbazuere also noted that a select few monarchs earned slightly higher amounts, with some receiving N21,000 monthly.

Agbazuere, who is now aligned with Governor Alex Otti’s administration, highlighted the contrast between the past and present government’s treatment of traditional rulers.

“Before Governor Alex Otti came on board, traditional rulers were receiving a stipend of N7,000, while a few others got N21,000. But now, Otti has increased their stipend to N250,000 per month,” Agbazuere stated.

He praised Governor Otti for his leadership and ability to prioritize the welfare of the state’s traditional institutions, asserting that the current administration deserves the people’s support.

The former Chief of Staff did not shy away from criticizing his former boss, Governor Ikpeazu, particularly for abandoning the Abia Airport project, which had been approved by the previous administration.

Agbazuere pointed out the irony of the situation, alleging that claims were made that traditional rulers had advised against continuing the airport project, even though it had already been approved.

“Somebody said he wanted to build an airport but then claimed that traditional rulers told him not to proceed with the project. I don’t understand,” Agbazuere remarked.

The former aide expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of implementation of his advice during the Ikpeazu administration.

He commended Governor Otti for taking proactive steps to partner with the federal government in constructing an international airport in the state, a project he described as crucial for Abia’s growth and development.

In response to Agbazuere’s statements, Eric Ikwuagwu, the Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia, dismissed the claims, stating that the party would not engage with Agbazuere’s remarks.

Ikwuagwu, referred to the former Chief of Staff as a “loose cannon” and suggested that Agbazuere was seeking political relevance after switching allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

As the political landscape in Abia continues to shift, Agbazuere’s comments have stirred debate over the handling of traditional institutions and infrastructure projects by past and current administrations.
