Akpabio-Natasha: ACF Calls for Justice Amid Senate Harassment Allegations

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has voiced strong concerns over the ongoing controversy in Nigeria's 10th Senate, involving Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central. The tension has escalated in recent weeks, following allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation made by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan against the Senate President.

In a statement released by the ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur A. Muhammad-Baba, the Forum emphasized the gravity of the accusations and their impact on national discourse. The ACF acknowledged the wide media coverage of the issue and expressed concern over the growing influence of public opinion on the proceedings.

"Several individuals and organizations have spoken passionately about this matter, including Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s husband, who felt compelled to address the public. Such interventions, while understandable, risk further eroding the reputation of the National Assembly, an institution entrusted with the critical role of law-making for the entire nation," the statement read.

The ACF also highlighted the political implications of the dispute for Kogi Central, noting that the region’s representation in the Senate may be suffering as a result of the ongoing controversy. The group warned that the interests of the people of Kogi Central must not be sidelined while these allegations are being resolved.

Adding to their concerns, the ACF pointed to what they perceive as a troubling trend of sanctions disproportionately affecting Northern lawmakers in the current Senate. Prof. Muhammad-Baba hinted at a possible bias, noting that several Northern Senators have faced severe disciplinary actions, including suspensions, under the leadership of President Akpabio.

"Though it may seem speculative, there is a growing concern within the ACF that these developments could be part of a larger, thinly-veiled anti-Arewa agenda in Nigerian politics. Whether this is a legitimate pattern or a coincidence, it warrants closer scrutiny," the statement continued.

In response to the situation, the ACF is calling for an independent, open, and transparent investigation into the allegations. The Forum stressed that only a fair and thorough inquiry would restore the public’s confidence in the Senate and its ability to serve the nation without bias or interference.

"Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done. The integrity of the Senate depends on its ability to navigate this controversy transparently and fairly," Prof. Muhammad-Baba stated.

The ACF also urged the leadership of the National Assembly to focus on its primary responsibilities, especially in light of the difficult economic conditions currently faced by Nigerians. The Forum argued that prolonged distractions from legislative duties would only worsen the country’s already challenging situation.

The statement went further to advise the Northern Caucus in the Senate to offer full support to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, ensuring that she is given a fair opportunity to defend herself and that her rights are respected throughout the process.

Finally, the ACF called on all members of the Senate to uphold high moral standards, discipline, and decorum in their conduct, reminding them that their actions have far-reaching consequences for the credibility of the 10th Senate.
