Renowned Nollywood actress Ayo Adesanya has opened up about the challenges she faced in her marriage, which ultimately led her to step away from acting.
In a recent interview on YouTube channel, Adesanya shared how her ex-husband’s controlling behavior negatively impacted her career.
Adesanya is a Nigerian film actress, producer and director. She appears in both Yoruba and English-language films.
Adesanya later joined the Yoruba-language film industry, where she has featured, produced and directed several films.[She also appears in English-language films.
In 1992, she joined the Nigeria movie industry (Nollywood) professionally and began her professional acting career and made her first appearance in the movie Living in Bondage.
According to the actress, her husband restricted her interactions to the point where she needed his permission to speak to people. This excessive control extended to her professional life, causing some of her colleagues to stop offering her movie roles.
“My husband restricted me so much that I couldn’t even talk to people without his approval,”she revealed.
“It got to a point where, whenever my colleagues called me for job opportunities, he would always question me. If a man called me, he would break my phone. Eventually, some actors stopped inviting me for movie roles because they knew he would interfere. Even when my colleagues tried to reach me, he would answer the calls and tell them I was unavailable.”

Her experience is a stark reminder of how emotional and psychological control in marriages can stifle careers, particularly in the entertainment industry, where networking and communication are crucial.
