Bayelsa Gov. Extends School Resumption by One Week

The Bayelsa State Government, through the Ministry of Education, has announced a one-week extension of the resumption date for all public and private primary and secondary schools in the state. Schools will now reopen on Monday, 25th November 2024. This decision was taken due to the persistent flooding affecting several school premises across the state.

In a recent statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Simon-Peter Okene, the government emphasized the importance of adhering to the new resumption date. He urged private school operators to align their schedules with the officially approved school calendar to ensure uniformity and orderliness in the state’s education system.

The statement also highlighted safety concerns as a major factor for the postponement. Stakeholders in the education sector were called upon to prioritize safety measures before schools reopen. These measures include clearing overgrown grasses, fumigating classrooms, and sanitizing school environments to guarantee a safe and conducive atmosphere for learning.

The Ministry stressed the need for collaboration between school administrators and relevant authorities to ensure that all safety guidelines are met. This effort is expected to reduce potential health risks and enhance the overall well-being of students and staff as they return to their respective institutions.

In expressing its solidarity with residents affected by the flood, the Bayelsa State Government extended heartfelt empathy to all those dealing with the devastating impact of the natural disaster. The government urged citizens to remain vigilant and prioritize safety during this challenging period.

The recurring floods in Bayelsa State, which often disrupt the academic calendar and daily life, have continued to be a source of concern for both the government and residents. Authorities have assured the public that steps are being taken to address the long-term implications of flooding on the education sector and other critical areas.

As the new resumption date approaches, the Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to creating a safe and enabling environment for students and teachers alike. Parents and guardians were encouraged to prepare their wards for the new term and to support school managements in maintaining the required safety standards.

This proactive step underscores the state government’s dedication to safeguarding education while addressing environmental challenges.
