Bayelsa Monarch Urges NDDC to Boost Niger Delta Development

A prominent traditional ruler in Bayelsa State, His Royal Highness David Amakiri, has expressed the eagerness of the Niger Delta people to witness greater development initiatives in the region.

In a recent statement, he lauded the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for its ongoing projects across various communities but emphasized the need for further interventions.

The commendation came during a formal visit by the NDDC’s Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, who led a high-ranking delegation to Amakiri’s palace in Oruma, located within the Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

This courtesy visit, which took place over the weekend, aimed to strengthen ties with local leaders and acknowledge the role of the traditional institution in fostering peace and development.

The visit was detailed in a statement released by the NDDC's Director of Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thompson-Wakama, in Port Harcourt.

Accompanying Dr. Ogbuku were notable officials, including Bayelsa State's representative on the NDDC Board, Senator Denyanbofa Dimaro, as well as other senior directors within the Commission.

Amakiri used the occasion to commend the NDDC for its significant impact on the growth of the local community and the Ogbia area at large.

Specifically, he expressed appreciation for the Commission’s construction of the Oruma rigid pavement road and other internal roads, which he noted had addressed long-standing infrastructure deficits in his community.

"The intervention from the NDDC has greatly alleviated the infrastructural challenges faced by my people," stated Amakiri, highlighting the improved quality of life and economic opportunities brought about by the projects.

He further emphasized that the region’s current peaceful climate, fostered by community efforts, should be seen as a conducive environment for sustained development.

“Our people are anxious for more development projects. We have ensured peace in the Niger Delta region and created a welcoming environment for growth. With this peace, there is no excuse for delayed development.”

Dr. Ogbuku, in his remarks, acknowledged the critical role of traditional rulers in maintaining regional stability and underscored the Commission’s commitment to inclusive progress.

“We recognize the invaluable contributions of traditional rulers in preserving peace and ensuring community cohesion,” he stated, urging the monarch to continue fostering unity to facilitate the timely implementation of development projects.

Among the NDDC's current initiatives is a major channelization project at Kolo Creek, connecting the Okarki-Otuogidi-Ogbia corridor in Rivers and Bayelsa States. Dr. Ogbuku explained that the project aims to clear blockages that contribute to seasonal flooding, thereby protecting the communities from waterborne diseases, including cholera.
