Bayelsa Residents Lament Soaring Petrol Cost

Just last week Wednesday, a yet-to-be-identified man was rescued by passersby while attempting to commit suicide by jumping from a pedestrian bridge in Lagos State.

The incident which happened in the Ajah area of the state caused a buzz on social media, with many attributing his actions to the current harsh economic situation biting hard on Nigerians daily.

The cost of petrol and commodities have skyrocketed, making life unbearable for the ordinary citizens.

According to Mr. Doubra Denven who spoke to Niger Delta Connect correspondent, said that since the inception of President Bola Tinubu's administration, Nigerians are the ones bearing the brunt of policies made by the government.

He said that Nigerians are not living anymore but, existing to survive instead.

“We are not even living anymore in Nigeria. We are just like existing to survive. Since the inception of this current, administration, we have been making sacrifices, the masses. Meanwhile, those in power are just piling up more, more, more, wealth and properties for themselves, evidently in front of everybody''.

“Yes, you're existing to survive. Like, can we talk about transportation at the moment? It is not something you can even wrap your head around like you as a passenger. You get upset. But at the same time, you feel for the tricycle operators. A Tricycle driver was telling me that for the day he makes around four to five thousand, So you can imagine how people surviving.

“Same thing when you go to the market. You can't go to the market and smile back. The easiest way to know somebody coming back from the market in Nigeria is just to look at the person's face.

The person must be frowning because you go for something. You bought one thousand naira yesterday, two days later, you're getting it for two or three times of the price. Like, it is so terrible at the moment. People are now doing plus and minus, when it comes to transportation to their workplace and for families who have kids and fees to pay, It is really terrible’’.

“The power situation is also not helping. So we don't even know where we stand at the moment. It's so confusing. I think governments, they are not being sincere because if e you're setting up these policies to help us, how come we are the ones bearing the brunt? The government is spending lavishly. The president is, getting a private jet, the yacht, and so forth, you know, approving money for the National Assembly to do upgrades on whatever God knows, buying SUVs for them’’.

He urged the Federal government to cut down on its spending and ensure the Refineries in the country are functional before removing subsidy entirely.

“Government should, first of all, start with cutting down the cost of governance. Let us be sincere with ourselves. Government must always subsidize, especially for a country that does not have functional refineries. You must subsidize petroleum because, you know, everything about your economy, is fixed around that petroleum, so that you don’t end up eliminating people you claim to be lifting”.

Also speaking James Okpurue, a motorist who complained the number of hours he stayed on the queue just the purchase the product, called on the Federal Government to bring down the price.

‘In fact, it is very bad because as a citizen of this country, we cannot experience this hardship and increase of fuel price every day. As a Niger Deltan, we are producing this oil, we suppose to have this at lower rate, but today, we cannot see the fuel, see us on queue waiting for fuel. My call to the federal government is to bring down the price, so that people can have peace in this nation’’.

It was observed that long queues are formed at the NNPC Mega filling station in Yenagoa as private fuel stations charged exorbitant prices, selling petrol for as much as ₦1,300-₦1400 per liter.
