BBNaija Star Elozonam Speaks On Impact Of ‘Japa’ Issues

In a candid conversation on the ‘Uncolored podcast’, BBNaija star Elozonam Ogbolu popularly called Elozonam shared his thoughts on the growing trend of Nigerians seeking greener pastures abroad, commonly referred to as the “japa” culture, and how it’s affecting personal connections.

Elozonam, like many Nigerians, has been impacted by the exodus of friends, family, and colleagues in search of better opportunities overseas.

He opened up about how the mass migration is causing a shift in how people approach relationships. Elozonam revealed that, over the past few years, the number of people close to him who have moved abroad has grown steadily.

He further highlighted that his own family dynamic has changed significantly, particularly with his twin brother and other siblings, who are now living abroad. This geographical distance, according to Elozonam, has led to weaker bonds and a growing sense of isolation.

Reflecting on the broader societal implications, Elozonam expressed concern about the deepening economic crisis in Nigeria, which has left many feeling disillusioned and uncertain about the future.

“Nigeria isn’t getting any better,” he lamented.

The worsening economic conditions, have made it difficult for individuals to sustain meaningful relationships as they continuously face the challenge of saying goodbye to loved ones who leave in search of better lives abroad.

He also touched on the emotional toll this migration trend has taken on him personally.

“Between 2018 to 2024, the first person that left my life was my boss when I was working a 9-5 job. We were close but he moved to Canada with his family.”

“After that, it’s like he opened the floodgate for everybody, people in my life started relocating abroad.”

Elozonam explained that it felt like a domino effect, as more and more people in his life followed suit, relocating to different countries in search of stability.

The star also spoke on the impact this has on forming new connections with new persons.

“You become wary of making new friends, because they might relocate abroad tomorrow,” he admitted.

For Elozonam, the uncertainty surrounding whether relationships will survive the pressures of migration has led him to keep things superficial. He is cautious about opening up to new people, knowing that they may soon be leaving Nigeria for good.

“So everything is on the surface level now, you can’t make real friends because they can relocate anytime.”
