Bishop Urges Govts To Extend Minimum Wage To Pensioners

States and Federal Governments have been told to start implementing the new national minimum wage and to extend it to pensioners across the country.

The Anglican Bishop of Owerri Diocese, Right Reverend Chukwuma Opara gave the advice in his Presidential address presented to the First Session of the Twenty Third Synod of the Diocese of Owerri held at the Cathedral Church of the Transfiguration of Our Lord (CATOL) Owerri, Imo State on Sunday, October 6, 2024.

Bishop Chukwuma Opara decried the way and manner in which Nigerian economy has been utterly mismanaged to the extent that high exorbitant cost of petroleum products particularly petrol and diesel brought about hunger, starvation, high cost of goods and services which citizens can no longer afford, yet the salary remained the same.

The Anglican prelate urged Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to put all the four public refineries in the country in order for petroleum products to be refined and distributed in the country.

Bishop Opara expressed concern over the mass exodus of Nigerians out of the country especially experts in different fields of endeavour and the youths and called on government to make the country more habitable by creating employment for the teeming youths as well as enabling environment for local and foreign investments.

The Anglican prelate also called on Nigerians to be patient and keep trusting God and working for a better tomorrow.

Speaking on the theme of the Synod; "You are the Gospel: the call for standing out for Christ in a challenging world", Bishop Opara said that every believer should be a gospel carrier of Jesus Christ and people must read the gospel from their lives.

In his sermon at the Thanksgiving Service entitled "Be the Gospel of Christ in a challenging world", the Dean Church of Nigeria, Archbishop of Niger Delta Province and Lord Bishop of Anglican Diocese of Ikwerre, Most Reverend Blessing Enyinda called on Christians to be the personification of the gospel and the instruments that bring people to Jesus Christ.

The Imo state Deputy Governor Lady Chinyere Ekomaru represented the state Governor Senator Hope Uzodimma at the synod thanks giving service.

Other government functionaries also attended the thanksgiving service.
