Bolt Driver Apologizes to Abia Lawmaker, Ikwechegh After Row

Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya has apologized to Hon. Alex Ikwechegh, the House of Representatives Member for Aba North/South, Abia State, following an altercation that occurred during a package delivery.

In a video, Mr. Abuwatseya expressed deep remorse and appealed to anyone offended by his actions to forgive him, hoping to ease the tension surrounding the incident.

He acknowledged that a misunderstanding occurred between him and Hon Alex Mascot Ikwechegh and took the opportunity to apologize for the provocative remarks he made during the altercation.

“Good day, Nigerians. My name is Stephen Abuwatseya. I had a misunderstanding with Rt. Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh a few days ago. I actually want to apologize to him for whatever I must have said or done to provoke him to that level of anger.

"I want to urge Nigerians that now is not the time to divide ourselves along religious, tribal, or regional lines. Instead, we should come together, focus on uniting the country, and work towards its progress," he said.

Continuing his expression of remorse, Abuwatseya called for unity and forgiveness across all sectors and ethnic groups in Nigeria, stressing the importance of always looking out for one another.

In his heartfelt message, the driver also took a moment to thank his family and supporters for standing by him during this difficult time, emphasizing that, as a young man striving to make an honest living, he harbors no ill will toward anyone.

According to Abuwatseya, his apology follows a public statement made by Hon. Ikwechegh, in which the lawmaker acknowledged his behavior during the altercation and expressed regret. In an Instagram post, Ikwechegh apologized to the Uber driver, the Nigerian Police Force, and the National Assembly, admitting that his actions did not meet the standards expected of a public official, no matter how intense the provocation may have been.

Ikwechegh explained that he had pursued alternative dispute resolution with Abuwatseya, resulting in a "mutual and respectful agreement" between them.

A viral video on social media showed Hon. Ikwechegh repeatedly slapping Stephen Abuwatseya. The federal lawmaker, angered by what he described as the driver's disrespectful behavior, even boasted that he could make him "disappear without a trace" without facing any consequences.

Social media influencer Martins Otse Vincent, also known as Verydarkman, briefly spoke with the driver, asking him to share his experience with Hon. Alex. In the video, the driver revealed that after their encounter, Hon. Alex had him arrested, and he spent several hours in detention.

However, after facing widespread public condemnation for his actions and remarks, Ikwechegh issued a public apology for his conduct. He was subsequently arraigned before an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court, where he was granted bail in the amount of N500,000, with two sureties in the same sum.
