Buckingham University Suspends VC After Affair Allegations

A dispute involving a Nigerian entrepreneur, Cynthia Tooley, has taken center stage in the suspension of Professor James Tooley, Vice Chancellor of the University of Buckingham. The suspension, which occurred in October 2023, is connected to allegations about a romantic relationship the professor allegedly had with a 25-year-old Indian woman. The scandal, which has captured the public's attention, has raised significant questions about personal conduct and professional ethics at the highest academic levels.

James Tooley, who earns an annual salary of £229,000, has denied all allegations. His suspension followed claims made by Cynthia Tooley, his estranged wife, who presented a series of diaries believed to belong to the Indian woman at the heart of the controversy. These diaries purportedly contained details of the alleged relationship, sparking an investigation by university authorities. In the wake of the allegations, the university launched an independent inquiry, and an emergency meeting resulted in the suspension of the Vice Chancellor from his prestigious post.

The couple’s history is also a subject of public interest. Cynthia, a mother of two, reportedly married the British academic in February 2022 after a short, whirlwind romance. However, their marriage appears to have unraveled by the summer of 2023, with reports indicating that they separated and that all further communication was conducted through lawyers. Cynthia’s decision to raise concerns with the university in October seemed to trigger the chain of events that followed, leading to Professor Tooley’s suspension and the ongoing investigation.

Through his legal representation, Tooley has vigorously denied the allegations, labeling them as “baseless and malicious.” The Vice Chancellor has expressed his belief that he will ultimately be exonerated, but has refrained from making further comments, citing the ongoing nature of the inquiry.

The Indian woman involved in the allegations, who has not been named, has spoken out in Tooley’s defense. In her statement, she emphasized that her relationship with the professor was consensual and free of any illegal conduct. “He was always kind, thoughtful, and respectful toward me,” she stated. She added that anyone who read her diaries would see that she was genuinely in love with him and that the relationship was not improper.

The University of Buckingham has responded by appointing an interim leadership team, tasked with overseeing the institution’s operations during the investigation. The temporary team includes Chief Financial Officer David Cole, Chief Administrative Officer Chris Payne, and Pro Vice-Chancellor Harriet Dunbar-Morris. These appointments are expected to provide stability to the university as it navigates the controversy and works through the ongoing inquiry.

Cynthia, who had previously lived at the Vice Chancellor’s official residence, Ondaatje Hall, has since relocated. The dissolution of the Tooleys' marriage has drawn widespread media attention, especially considering their public roles and the circumstances surrounding their breakup. As the investigation unfolds, the university and all parties involved continue to face heightened scrutiny, making this case a noteworthy chapter in academic governance and personal conduct at high-ranking institutions.

While the final conclusions of the inquiry remain pending, the situation raises larger questions about personal ethics and the boundaries between professional responsibilities and private lives, particularly when high-profile figures like Professor Tooley are involved. As more information becomes available, it remains to be seen how the university will ultimately address the matter and the reputational impact it may have on all parties concerned.
