CAF’s Motsepe Visits Kenya For CHAN 2024 Preparations

On Friday, December 20, 2024, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe, held an important meeting with Kenyan President William Ruto at State House in Nairobi. The discussion centered around Kenya's preparations for the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, a tournament that will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Dr. Motsepe's visit is part of a broader tour to assess the readiness of the three host nations for the prestigious football tournament, which will take place in early 2024. As part of his itinerary, he was in Tanzania earlier in the week, where he met with officials to review the country's preparations. Following his engagement in Kenya, he is scheduled to visit Uganda later on Friday.

During the meeting with President Ruto, Dr. Motsepe expressed his gratitude for the Kenyan government's unwavering support for football development in the country. He acknowledged President Ruto’s commitment to nurturing and promoting the sport at all levels, particularly as the country prepares to host the prestigious tournament. The CAF President was joined by key figures from the continental football body, including CAF’s 4th Vice-President Seidou Mbombo Njoya, the Chairperson of the CHAN Organizing Committee, and CAF Secretary-General Veron Mosengo-Omba.

The discussions also involved newly elected Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed, who was present along with the members of the CHAN 2024 Local Organizing Committee. This team, led by Chairperson Nicholas Musonye, is responsible for coordinating the logistics and ensuring smooth operations ahead of the tournament. Together, they reviewed the progress of preparations for the event, which will feature teams from across the continent competing for the prestigious title.

One of the highlights of Dr. Motsepe's visit was a tour of some of the key venues that will host the tournament, including the iconic Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadiums. These venues are expected to be pivotal in the staging of the games, with both playing host to major fixtures during the competition. The CAF President also visited several other training facilities that will be used by participating teams during the tournament.

Dr. Motsepe's visit to Kenya has been seen as a critical step in ensuring that all logistical elements are in place for a successful CHAN 2024. The tournament, which is set to showcase the best football talent from across Africa, will be a significant moment for the host nations, particularly Kenya, as they work to demonstrate their capability in organizing major international sporting events.
