Canadian-Based Doctor Says Nigeria Offers Better Life

A Nigerian-born medical professional based in Canada, Dr. Zo, has ignited a social media conversation by challenging the conventional view on remittances from Nigerians abroad to their relatives back home. In a recent viral video, Dr. Zo shared his perspective on the lifestyle differences between Nigerians living overseas and those residing in Nigeria, suggesting that Nigerians within the country may actually enjoy a higher standard of living.

In the video, Dr. Zo candidly expressed his thoughts about the contrasting realities for Nigerians in the diaspora and those at home. "When you’re abroad, working hard to earn, and sending money back to Nigeria, you have to realize—people in Nigeria are living a better lifestyle than you," he said, referencing the vibrant energy and lifestyle in major Nigerian cities like Lagos.

Dr. Zo also reminisced about the local culture, including the cuisine, stating, “Nigeria is an amazing place. I think we should pray for the government to get better because honestly, there’s no Jollof like Nigerian Jollof. It’s a unique experience.”

Reflecting on his time in Nigeria, Dr. Zo said he was seriously considering investing in property in the country, underscoring his belief in the nation’s potential. “I plan to book a house here soon. The way life is in Nigeria, it’s something I want to enjoy more often. If I send money to anyone now, I’ll be telling them, ‘You’re living the better life,’” he remarked.

In a follow-up video, Dr. Zo reiterated his stance, emphasizing that his views were shaped not only by his experiences in Nigeria but also by his extensive time spent abroad. "I’ve traveled around the world—lived on four continents—and I can tell you, even as a top medical practitioner in Canada, the energy and quality of life here in Nigeria is something special,” he declared. He went on to express that if he could find a job paying even a fraction of his current salary, he would consider returning to Nigeria. "The food, the people, the culture—it’s all so unique. Life here is better than what we have abroad.”

Dr. Zo’s comments have sparked mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians in the diaspora agreeing with his perspective, while others criticized his views as overly simplistic. Many have pointed out the challenges faced by Nigerians living in the country, including economic instability, insecurity, and limited opportunities, arguing that the disparities between life in Nigeria and abroad are more complex than Dr. Zo suggests.

However, the doctor’s candid reflections have also contributed to a broader discussion about the role of the Nigerian diaspora in the country’s economy, particularly in relation to the billions of dollars sent home each year through remittances. Some have called for more thoughtful discussions about how these funds are used and whether they truly improve the quality of life for recipients.

As the conversation continues, Dr. Zo’s viral video has prompted many Nigerians to reconsider the value of financial support they send home, questioning whether their contributions are truly enhancing the lives of their loved ones, or if they are simply supporting a lifestyle that may not need as much help as previously thought.
