Edo Election 2024: Peter Obi Berates INEC Over Edo Polls

A former Presidential Candidate, Peter Gregory Obi, has strongly condemned the outcome of the Edo state election poll, calling it a blatant and gross undermining of Nigeria's democratic process and values.

In a statement released on Monday, Obi expressed his disappointment and concern over the election results, highlighting the need to uphold the principles of democracy and ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

“What happened over the weekend in the name of election in Edo State does not in any way represent the democratic process we chose as a method of electing our political leadership”, Obi stated .

The former Anambra state governor, warned that such flawed leadership recruitment processes could have damaging consequences for the nation and its people.

Obi called on authorities to address the situation;

“I urge those in authority not to allow this situation to stand, or depend on it to remain in power”.

He also stressed the importance of properly utilising the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) technological advancements, such as IReV and BVAS, to ensure free and fair elections.

The former Anambra State governor further went on to addressing those who had various involvement in undermining the democratic process.

“To the agencies and individuals being used to undermine our democracy simply because they hold positions of authority, please remember that your time in office is not eternal. The society that you are helping to destroy today will eventually take her revenge on you tomorrow”.

“To the lecturers and others complicit in perpetuating this charade, you must reflect deeply on the roles you are playing in damaging the very foundation of our democracy. The damage you are causing today will inevitably take revenge on you tomorrow and affect your children in the future. This kind of action has no place in a true democracy”.

Expressing his vision for Nigeria, Obi stated that recent method of politics shouldn’t be about have or exercising power, instead it should be about saving the country and it’s people.

He advised that politics should also be about making things work positively for the everyone irrespective of their background or class, and also the nation at large.

“Today’s politics is not about capturing power, but about saving the country and making it work for everyone, regardless of their background”.

He therefore described the just concluded Edo state gubernatorial elections as “ state capture”.
