FG Allocates N10.3b For HIV Drugs, Others

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has sanctioned a budget of approximately 10.3 billion for the procurement of essential medical supplies, including antiretroviral drugs for HIV treatment, diabetes diagnostic kits, and other critical health commodities. This initiative aims to enhance the accessibility and affordability of healthcare services across Nigeria.

A significant portion of the budget, nearly 997 million, is earmarked for the acquisition of third-line antiretroviral (ARV) drugs. This measure addresses the needs of HIV patients who have developed resistance to first and second-line treatments. The decision underscores the government’s commitment to sustaining HIV treatment amidst evolving global health financing landscapes, emphasizing a shift towards domestic funding to ensure uninterrupted care for Nigerians living with HIV.

In response to the escalating prevalence of diabetes in Nigeria, the FEC has approved the procurement of locally produced diabetes diagnostic kits. This initiative not only aims to facilitate early detection and management of diabetes but also supports local manufacturing industries. A Lagos-based company has been contracted to produce these on-point blood glucose monitoring systems, reflecting the government’s strategy to invigorate the healthcare value chain by promoting indigenous production.

To ensure effective utilization, these diagnostic kits will be distributed across primary healthcare centers nationwide. Healthcare workers will receive training to assist patients in monitoring their blood sugar levels, thereby enhancing disease management and patient outcomes.

Aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to reduce the cost of medical commodities, the FEC has allocated a 4.5 billion for the procurement of essential medications. This allocation encompasses antibiotics, antihypertensive, and antidiabetic drugs, all sourced from local manufacturers. This approach not only aims to lower healthcare costs but also stimulates the local pharmaceutical sector, ensuring a sustainable supply of affordable medicines for Nigerians.

Furthering its commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure, the government has approved a N2.1 billion for the procurement of a mobile X-ray machine and the rehabilitation and equipping of a 64-slice CT scan at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi.

These advancements are expected to elevate diagnostic and clinical care services, positioning the hospital as a referral center not only for Bauchi State but also for the surrounding regions.

These comprehensive measures reflect the Nigerian government’s dedication to enhancing healthcare delivery by investing in essential medical supplies, supporting local manufacturing, and upgrading healthcare infrastructure. Such initiatives are pivotal in ensuring that quality healthcare services are both accessible and affordable to all Nigerians.
