The Federal Government convened a meeting with leaders of the Organized Labour on Wednesday at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, in Abuja.
Leading the government's delegation was the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris. On the labour side, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, and the Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nuhu Toro, were present. Also in attendance were key officials including the Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu.
While the specific agenda of the meeting was not publicly disclosed, the Organized Labour has expressed dissatisfaction with the recent spike in fuel prices, electricity tariffs, rising inflation, and the soaring cost of living.
Last week, retail outlets owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) raised the pump price of petrol in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
In Lagos, NNPCL stations now sell a litre of petrol for ₦998, an increase of ₦150 from the previous price of ₦855. Meanwhile, in Abuja, the price per litre rose from ₦897 to ₦1,030.
This latest hike follows a previous increase by NNPCL on September 2, 2024, when the price surged from ₦568 to ₦855, causing public outrage. Earlier in June, the price had jumped from ₦184 to ₦568.
