Flood Update: NIHSA Places 11 States on Red Alert

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), on Tuesday cautioned the public of the proposed release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.

It was gathered that the authorities of the Lagdo Dam, had previously informed the Agency that the Dam will begin regulated water release.

The Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, Umar Muhammed in a statement sighted by Our Correspondent stated that, the planned water release process will be gradual, to avoid escalation and overwhelming the carriage capacity of the Benue river system.

The statement reads, “The water release from the Lagdo Dam is expected to stop, just as soon as there is a notable decrease inflow into the Lagdo reservoir, so as to avoid major flood disaster in most parts of Nigeria”.

According to the Agency, the water release will take effect from September 17th, 2024, with a release rate of 1000m³/s and it’s expected to increase gradually in the next 7days.

“The Agency Wishes to state that there is no cause for alarm, as expectation of major flood disaster in mainstream Nigeria will not be anticipated”.

“The water flow level along the river Benue are still captained within the warning level”.

However, the water release from the Lagdo Dam has since been a cause for concern to many in Nigeria as it affects many states as the entry point of River Benue.

Recently, Borno state recorded a disastrous flood attack which took over 30 lives and rendered 70% residents in Maiduguri, displaced.

The agency strongly advised that it is highly necessary for all states within the river Benue system to take proactive steps, be vigilant and also ensure adequate preparedness to reduce possible flooding disaster that may probably occur in the cause of heavy impact flow into major rivers.

The said states that are contiguous to the river Benue system are; Kogi, Adamawa, Nasarawa, Benue, Taraba, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross-rivers, Anambra, Rivers.

“The agency promises to closely continue to monitor the water flow situation of the trans boundary river Benue, and will steadily provide accurate and regular updates on the water level across major rivers to forestall further major flood disaster”, the statement added.
