Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has directed the newly elected local government chairmen and councillors in the state to avoid entering their respective council secretariats. The governor issued this directive on Sunday during the swearing-in ceremony held at the Government House, Oke-Fia, Osogbo.
Governor Adeleke explained that the order was necessary to prevent potential clashes with individuals who are allegedly occupying the council offices unlawfully. He emphasized that the directive would remain in place until the courts resolve ongoing legal disputes concerning the legitimacy of the elections.
The February 22, 2025, local government elections, organized by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC), were praised by the governor for being conducted transparently and lawfully. Adeleke commended OSIEC for its professionalism and adherence to democratic principles throughout the electoral process.
However, despite the successful conduct of the elections, the results face legal challenges. Governor Adeleke assured the public that his administration remains committed to upholding the rule of law and respecting judicial processes. He expressed confidence that the judiciary would play a pivotal role in ensuring a peaceful resolution to the disputes surrounding the elections.
“The judiciary will ensure a peaceful transition,” Adeleke remarked, referencing a recent Osun State High Court ruling. The court had previously affirmed that the local government positions were indeed vacant before the elections took place, providing a legal basis for the electoral exercise.
The governor urged the newly sworn-in officials to remain patient as the legal processes unfold. He emphasized that they must avoid actions that could escalate tensions, especially disputes over office occupancy. Adeleke reiterated that adherence to the law is crucial during this period and that the officials should focus on their responsibilities rather than office control issues.
Addressing the newly elected chairmen and councillors, Governor Adeleke called on them to prioritize good governance and work diligently for the welfare of the people. He reminded them that their roles are essential to the development of their respective communities and that they must remain committed to the principles of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under which they were elected.
“The focus should be on delivering democratic dividends to the people, not engaging in power tussles,” Adeleke stated. He encouraged them to channel their energy toward developmental projects and policies that would positively impact the lives of Osun State residents.
Although the swearing-in ceremony had a celebratory tone, Adeleke’s caution underscored the sensitive nature of the current political environment. The legal battles over the elections have created uncertainties, and the governor’s directive seeks to maintain peace while the judiciary addresses these issues.
As the situation continues to evolve, Governor Adeleke has appealed for calm and unity among all stakeholders. He urged residents and political actors in the state to support the ongoing legal processes and trust that justice would prevail.
The governor’s decision highlights his commitment to maintaining peace and order in Osun State while reinforcing the importance of the rule of law.
