Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has reiterated his unwavering confidence in the nation’s judiciary, describing it as "the last hope of the common man." His remarks were made during the inauguration of the 14.1km Umuakali-Eberi-Omodu Road project in Omuma Local Government Area on Saturday. Governor Fubara took the opportunity to commend the judiciary’s strides and urged Nigerians to remain hopeful, despite challenges facing the country.
The Governor, speaking at the State School II Field in Obibi Umuogba, emphasized the critical importance of the judiciary in ensuring justice and fairness, especially during politically charged times. He expressed his gratitude for its role in maintaining peace and justice in the country and encouraged Nigerians not to be discouraged by recent political tensions.
The road project, which connects Omuma to neighboring Abia State, was described by Governor Fubara as a transformative initiative for the people of Omuma. He highlighted that this road would facilitate easier access for social, economic, and cultural exchanges between communities in the area and Abia State, further enhancing regional development. "This is governance for the people," Fubara stated, underscoring the importance of infrastructure in driving progress.
The Governor also received the traditional title of "Nwanne di na mba" (Our brother in another land) from the leadership of the Omuma Area Council of Traditional Rulers, led by the King of Eberi-Omuma Kingdom, Eze Onyekachi Amaonwu. The title was conferred as a mark of appreciation for his leadership and commitment to Omuma’s development.
In his address, Governor Fubara spoke candidly about the political dynamics in the area, pointing out that for years, Omuma’s development had been controlled by a single individual. "This Local Government was under a siege by one person. But today, you can see the liberation," Fubara said, stressing that the region was now on a path of collective empowerment and shared responsibility for development. He reiterated that his focus was not on fostering individual power but on building communities and empowering people to take control of their own development.
Fubara also highlighted the ongoing efforts of his administration to address the needs of various communities in Rivers State. He emphasized that while political opponents may claim his administration is underperforming, the reality on the ground tells a different story. "When they thought we were being emasculated, we were behind working," he said, referring to the successful completion of the road project and other ongoing initiatives in the region.
The Governor noted that his administration’s commitment to rural transformation was reflected in the development of Omuma and other local government areas. He called on the people to embrace peace and resolve issues through lawful means, reminding them that governance is about serving the people and improving their lives.
Governor Fubara’s remarks were echoed by his counterpart, the Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, who was present at the inauguration. Governor Mohammed praised Governor Fubara for his quiet but impactful leadership, noting that despite facing political opposition, Fubara had remained focused on delivering for the people. He described the Umuakali-Eberi Road project as a symbol of good governance and a model for others to follow.
"Governor Fubara is a performer par excellence," Governor Mohammed stated. "In the midst of all the distractions, I have seen works being done. This is the hope for Nigeria. This is the governance that Nigerians need." He also urged the Federal Government to focus on improving governance, advising President Bola Tinubu to be wary of those within his administration who might hinder progress.
The inauguration of the road project was seen as a significant milestone in the state’s infrastructure development. Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Barrister Elloka Tasie-Amadi, provided details of the 14.1km road, which will improve movement, boost socio-economic activities, and enhance the well-being of local communities. Omuma Local Government Chairman, Promise Reginald, also expressed his gratitude to Governor Fubara for delivering inclusive projects that have fostered a sense of belonging and hope among the people.
