Igbokwe Finally Assumes Office As Rector, Fed Poly Nekede

Renowned academic, Dr. Basilia Igbokwe on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 formally assumed office as the 9th substantive rector of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, Imo State.


The ceremony began with a procession which kicked off at the polytechnic junction at Naze in Owerri North Local Government Area of the state.


The procession was undertaken by academics adorned in academic robes from the institution who trekked from the junction to polytechnic’s 1,000capacity auditorium.

They were joined by friends and well-wishers of the rector as well as youths of the host community and students of the polytechnic.


In his address at the ceremony, the state Governor Hope Uzodimma noted that the polytechnic is known for churning out full-baked graduates who have impacted positively to the socio-economic development of Nigeria.

Gov Uzodimma, who was represented by his deputy, Lady Chinyere Ekomaru urged the new rector to continue the excellent and remarkable trajectory of the institution and even improve on it.


The governor reminded her that the future of the institution has been entrusted into her hands for the next five years, stressing that to achieve her set goals, she must cooperate and collaborate with the polytechnic stakeholders.


He listed the stakeholders to include the institution’s Governing Council, management team, members of staff, students and the host community.


Gov Uzodimma also enjoined the management of the polytechnic to rise against social vices such as examination malpractices cultism, drug abuse, indecent dressing, prostitution, sex-for-marks and fraud which have bedeviled the ivory towers in the country.


The governor equally enjoined the polytechnic to embrace evolving techniques and technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the betterment of the institution and society.


While pointing out the need to invest more time, resources and energy in research and development, Gov Uzodimma urged the new management to revive the institution’s moribund table water factory, tissue paper factory, fashion and catering home, poultry, bakery and fish farms.


In her remarks, the new rector Dr Basilia Igbokwe reeled out an 11-point agenda of her administration which included staff welfare, environmental cleanliness, government of inclusiveness and Information Communication Technology (ICT) development.


She expressed readiness to work with all including those who opposed her appointment as long as they are willing to work with her.

Dr. Igbokwe also expressed her profound gratitude for the warm reception accorded her, saying she never knew she was this loved and cherished.
