Imo Assembly Calls For Beefing Up Of Security In Public Schools

The Imo State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling for the tightening of security at public primary and secondary schools in the state.

The House urged the State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma to direct the Commissioner for Education Prof John Cliff Nwadike to liaise with relevant security agencies to ensure the posting of security operatives to man public schools in the state.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion moved by member representing Owerri Municipality Hon Clinton Amadi.

Amadi bemoaned the activities of criminals and vandals in primary and secondary schools in the state who he said have converted schools to centres of immorality.

He added that the criminals defecate, smoke hard substances and turn teachers' and headmasters/principals' offices to chalets at night.

The lawmaker disclosed that in the morning, school premises are littered with condoms, remnants of Indian hemp and tobacco.

He stressed that the criminals would go further to steal iron shelves, drawers, furniture, gates, doors, windows and destroy students' lockers and chairs.

The Deputy Minority Leader regretted that efforts being made by the state government to provide a conducive environment for teaching and learning at the schools were being thwarted by criminals and vandals.

He said; These criminal elements come into the school premises to openly defecate and smoke Indian hemp and other hard drugs in nearby bushes and farmlands, even while teaching and learning are going on. They threaten the lives of teachers and students who try to challenge their activities, thereby putting everyone in danger. Lack of security personnel in public schools have made this anomaly to fester. We need to put a stop this because If it is allowed to continue, the future of our children will be uncertain".*

Twelve members co-sponsored the motion which was seconded by Hon Sam Osuji (Isiala Mbano).

Three members namely Hon Johnleoba Iheoha(Ikeduru), Hon Sam Osuji (Isiala Mbano) and Hon James Esile (Onulmo) also decried the activities of criminals at public schools in the state.

They called for the fencing of the schools and supported the posting of security personnel to man the schools.

The Speaker Hon Chike Olemgbe put the motion to vote and the ayes had it.

Thereafter, Hon Chike Olemgbe directed the Clerk Barr Chinelo Emeghara to communicate the resolution of the House to the state governor Senator Hope Uzodimma.
