At least 10 individuals have tragically lost their lives, and several others have sustained injuries in a stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, on Saturday morning.
This incident comes just days after a devastating stampede in Ibadan, Oyo State, where at least 35 children were killed, and six others were critically injured during a children's funfair.
According to reports, the stampede in Abuja occurred when a large crowd gathered to collect palliatives distributed by the church. The event, intended to offer relief to struggling residents, attracted a high turnout, particularly from Mpape, Gishiri Village, and surrounding areas.
Eyewitnesses state that the incident took place between 7 am and 8 am, as the crowd surged forward in a scramble for aid.
In an effort to control the situation, a joint force of police, military, and DSS officers was dispatched to restore order and disperse the crowd. The church grounds, once crowded with anxious recipients, slowly emptied as security forces implemented the suspension.
