In an official statement, Real Madrid has confirmed that right-back Dani Carvajal has undergone knee surgery and is on his way to recovery.
The Spanish capital club at midday said: "Our player Dani Carvajal has undergone successful surgery today on a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and posterior-external instability in his right knee, under the supervision of Real Madrid's Medical Services."
According to reports, the Madrid captain suffered a serious injury last Saturday in a game clash against Villarreal which led to the unfortunate incident with forward Yeremy Pino, who also left the Spanish national team training camp yesterday due to physical problems.
Speaking in accordance with the rehabilitation plan, which is expected to last between eight and 10 months, Real Madrid said: "Carvajal will begin his recovery process in the next few days."
Carvajal was stretchered off in stoppage time after a duel with Villarreal midfielder Yeremy Pino caused him to sprain his right knee unnaturally.
"Serious cruciate ligament injury confirmed, I'll have to undergo surgery and be off the field for a few months," Carvajal said in a post he made on Instagram, posting his picture in an ambulance.
"Looking forward to starting the recovery process and coming back like an animal. Thank you all for your messages, I feel very loved," the post read.
Furthermore, Madrid's Coach Carlo Ancelotti was concerned about Carvajal's injury, which happens to be the latest blow for the Spanish side after they played without goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who suffered an abductor muscle injury against Atletico last weekend.
In a statement on Sunday October 6th, Real said Carvajal had been "diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, a ruptured external collateral ligament and a ruptured popliteal tendon in his right leg."
The LaLiga club further mentioned that winger Vinicius Jr. had suffered a cervical injury in the same match.
There is certainty that Carvajal will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign and it remains to be seen at what point in the following season he will rejoin the team.
According to reports, the team's move in an act acknowledge his loyalty, renewed his contract until 2026 immediately after learning of the extent of the injury.
Meanwhile, on the table,Real Madrid are second in the standings, level on 21 points with leaders Barcelona, who visit 11th-placed Alaves later on Sunday.
