NAF, Team Delta Win National Volleyball League in Abia

The Phase 2 of the Nigerian National Volleyball Federation Division 1 and 2 Championship, held in Umuahia, Abia State, concluded with the Nigerian Air Force team, Defence Spikers, claiming victory in the men's category and Team Delta winning in the women's category.


At the conclusion of the championship, Musa Nimrod, President of the Volleyball Federation of Nigeria, expressed his pleasure with the high quality of the tournament, which featured competitors from 19 states.


He encouraged South East leaders to invest more in sports and engage youth in athleticsactivities, highlighting that such investments could help diminish crime rates and curb youth restlessness.


He stated that promoting sports can offer positive outlets for young people, encouraging both personal development and social stability within the community.


At the grand finale, Nwaobilor Ananaba, Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, and Obioma George, Director of Sports, praised the athletes for their sportsmanship. They noted that the sponsorship from Governor Alex Otti’s administration is drawing more sports federations to grant the state hosting rights.


Ananaba acknowledged that the Abia volleyball team underperformed but assured that they would achieve better results in future competitions.


Master Warrant Officer Yakubu Solomon, the Head Coach of the Nigerian Air Force volleyball team, expressed his happiness at their victory, noting that their last trophy win was in 2003. He also extended his gratitude to Governor Alex Otti for hosting the event.


Recall, the Championship began on October 10 in Umuahia, Abia State, featuring 19 states vying for glory, and concluded on October 20. The Volleyball League, which includes both male and female categories, was held at the Umuahia Township Stadium.


The First Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Volleyball Referees Association, Mohammed Mohammed had assured that no team would experience unfair officiating, emphasizing that all referees would perform their duties professionally.


He also advised players and teams to refrain from unprofessional behavior during the Championship and to accept the outcomes of their matches gracefully, even in defeat.


Givernor Alex Otti through Nwaobilor Ananaba, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development had also stated that he is committed to establishing Abia as a sports destination. He noted that since present administration took office, numerous sports federations have begun associating with Abia State, hosting various sports events.
