Nigeria's war on drug trafficking has gained momentum, thanks to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). Recent successes have left drug traffickers reeling.
On October 7, 2024, Oguejiofor Nnaemeka Simonpeter, a Thailand returnee, was arrested at Lagos International Airport with 13.30 kilograms of heroin worth over N3.192 billion.
Days later, Okelue Chidera was apprehended in Anambra on October 12, 2024, with 50,000 tablets of tramadol 200mg. Monday Akele was caught in Edo state on October 11, 2024, for cannabis-related offenses.
Between October 7-11, 2024, massive opioid consignments valued at N22,740,958,000 were seized at three seaports: Lekki Deep Seaport, Apapa seaport in Lagos, and Port Harcourt Port Complex, Onne, Rivers state.
NDLEA Chairman Brig-Gen. Mohamed Marwa (Rtd) commended officers for their diligence.
As Nigeria intensifies its fight against drug trafficking, one question remains: Will increased collaboration between the NDLEA and local communities further reduce drug abuse and trafficking?
