Nigeria Cracks Down on Press Freedom

Four Nigerian journalists are behind bars, facing serious charges for reporting on alleged fraud involving Guaranty Trust Bank's CEO, Segun Agbaje.

Olurotimi Olawale, Precious Eze Chukwunonso, Roland Olonishuwa, and Seun Odunlami were charged with violating Nigeria's Cybercrimes Act and criminal code.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemns their detention, calling it a "chilling message" to journalists nationwide.

If convicted, the journalists face up to 14 years in prison and hefty fines.

Their reporting sparked controversy, but advocates argue that a free press is essential for holding those in power accountable.

International attention focuses on Nigeria as these journalists await trial. The outcome will set a precedent for press freedom in the country. Will Nigeria prioritize journalistic freedom or silence its critics? The world watches.
