Nigeria Govt Refutes Niger Claims On Pipeline Attack

The Nigerian government has firmly rejected claims made by Nigerien authorities suggesting that it played a role in the December 13 attack on the Niger-Benin oil pipeline in the Dosso Region of Niger. In a statement issued on Saturday, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, categorically denied any involvement with the Lakurawa terrorist group or any allegations that Nigerian security forces were complicit in the attack.

The statement emphasized that Nigeria holds no connection to the perpetrators of the assault and expressed deep sympathy for the government and citizens of Niger. However, it made clear that the Federal Government of Nigeria remains committed to its stance against terrorism and would never condone or support such violent actions.

"The Federal Government of Nigeria rejects in the strongest possible terms the allegations from the Nigerien authorities that the Lakurawa terrorist group, allegedly supported by foreign security forces, including Nigerian forces, was behind the attack on the Niger-Benin oil pipeline on December 13, 2024," the statement read. "While we express condolences to the government and people of Niger over this tragic incident, it is essential to clarify that the perpetrators were not aided or endorsed by Nigerian authorities."

The government also addressed another aspect of the allegations, which included claims that French military forces were present in northern Nigeria with the intention of destabilizing Niger. Nigeria dismissed these accusations as baseless and urged their immediate dismissal.

"In response to the unsubstantiated reports of French military operations in northern Nigeria, the Nigerian government categorically states that these allegations are entirely false," the statement continued. "There are no French military troops in Nigeria plotting to destabilize the Republic of Niger. These claims are groundless and must be disregarded."

Nigeria also took the opportunity to reiterate its long-standing diplomatic ties with France, underscoring the principles of mutual respect and non-interference that guide their relations. The Nigerian government emphasized that these partnerships are centered on promoting stability, peace, and prosperity for both nations, especially in combating terrorism and other regional security challenges.

The statement concluded with a firm reaffirmation of Nigeria’s dedication to fostering peaceful and cooperative relationships with its neighboring countries, particularly Niger. "Nigeria remains steadfast in its commitment to peaceful cooperation and stability in the region," it said. "We will continue to seek constructive engagement with Niger and other partners to ensure the well-being of our citizens and the broader West African community."
