Nigerians React To Proposal For New Bola Tinubu University

A significant majority of Nigerians have rejected the proposal for a new Bola Tinubu University, expressing concerns about its necessity, potential impact on existing educational resources, and broader priorities in the education sector regarding public fund allocation.

Following the first reading of a bill to establish the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages, the House of Representatives has ignited widespread frustration among Nigerians.

The bill was sponsored by Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Kalu and eight others, stating that the bill aims to promote the study of Nigerian languages and cultures.

If approved, the university will provide diplomas, undergraduate degrees, and postgraduate programs in Nigerian languages, emphasizing national development and cultural preservation.

According to the bill, this proposed federal institution would act as a hub for research and innovation, enhancing training in Nigerian languages. Additionally, the bill gives the President, serving as the university's Visitor considerable powers, including the ability to conduct periodic visits and remove council members.

The announcement has, however, provoked strong reactions on social media, as many are questioning the timing and significance of this project considering the current issues plaguing Nigeria's educational sector.

On X, critics have pointed out the ongoing difficulties faced by current universities, which frequently go on strike because of insufficient funding and limited resources.

@ChibuikemJohn noted, “Nigerian universities often strike due to a lack of adequate funding and essential facilities, struggling to stay afloat, yet our representatives are pushing to establish a new university in honor of the president.”

@EmekaNwuaku: How is this our priority..the problem of tetiary education in Nigeria is poor funding and not more universities.

A social media user suggested that the government should focus on addressing the struggling economy and widespread hardship rather than establishing a university named after the president.

@ericson_egbon: Nobody is talking about fuel and the bad economy but University

Another handle @pascaboro stated "this man in question is just 18 months in office, and you’ve started naming university after him. Please, he’s here to serve Nigerians and not the other way round

@jerimiadetunji Obviously, the political leaders and the led are not on the same page regarding the economic situation of the country.

Contrary to some other views, @DalconShaniyi posted "Emi l’okan will be a paramount subject to be taught as it’s a statement that came to pass. A University of thought and provoking strong will, that will remove all doubts in the mindsets. This is a good citadel of knowledge that is needed in Nigeria at this moment."
