Otti Announces 13th-Month Salary, Set to Review Minimum Wage

The Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has confirmed that his administration will pay both the December salaries and the 13th-month salary to state workers before December 20.

Otti made the announcement during a meeting with leaders of workers' unions in the state.

The delegation, headed by the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abia, Comrade Ogbonnaya Okoro, had raised key issues concerning workers' welfare with the Governor.

"As we did last year, I want to announce that we will pay the 13th-month salary this year as well," Governor Otti stated.

He also reaffirmed his administration's commitment to the welfare of workers, recognizing their essential role as partners in the state's development.

He led an extensive review of the state's salary framework, focusing on inconsistencies in the application of the National Minimum Wage adjustments that were introduced in October.

"I have directed my team to reexamine the salary structure and resolve the issues identified. In the coming days, we will consult with the leadership of Organized Labour to finalize the required adjustments," he stated.

In response to reports that listed Abia as one of the states yet to implement the new National Minimum Wage, Governor Otti dismissed these claims, calling them a "misunderstanding."

He also emphasized that pensioners have been receiving their full payments on the 28th of each month since April, expressing gratitude to the Concerned Abia Pensioners for their continued support.

“When I first met with the NUP leadership, they made it clear that their primary concern was securing a commitment from the government to pay them 100 percent of their pension starting from that month, without focusing on the arrears. I felt this approach was unfair,” Otti explained.

In his response, Comrade Ogbonnaya Okoro, the NLC Chairman, expressed gratitude to the governor for his dedication to workers' welfare and for addressing the issues related to salary payments. He also noted that the union would raise additional concerns with the governor at a later time.

Okoro assured Governor Otti of the workers' ongoing support to ensure his success in office.

The meeting, which was attended by numerous government officials, also saw the presence of chairmen and secretaries from affiliated unions of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council.
