The Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced the appointment of Mr. Benson Ojeikere as the new Head of Service (HoS) for the state.
The appointment, which follows a comprehensive merit-based selection process, will take effect on December 31, 2024.
Ojeikere, a native of Edo State, has dedicated several decades of service to Abia State, holding various positions within the civil service, including serving as Permanent Secretary at the Government House.
He will succeed Dr. Queen Obioma, the current Head of Service, who is set to retire on December 31, 2024.
The news was conveyed in a statement by the Secretary to the Abia State Government, Prof. Kenneth Kalu.
The Governor extended his congratulations to Mr. Ojeikere on his new role, recognizing his qualifications and expertise.
He also took the opportunity to commend the outgoing Head of Service, Dr. Ngozi Queen Obioma, who is retiring after serving the state. Governor Otti expressed his gratitude for Dr. Obioma’s significant contributions during her tenure.
The statement reads, “Following the conclusion of a rigorous merit-based selection process, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, has approved the appointment of Mr. Benson Ojeikere as the new Head of Service for Abia State Civil Service, effective from December 31, 2024.”
In addition to the appointment of the new HoS, Governor Otti has also expanded the Governing Council of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, by approving the inclusion of seven new members.
A statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, on Monday confirmed the appointments, which are effective immediately.
The newly appointed members of the ABSU Governing Council include are Elelenta Nwabuisi Elele PhD, Stanley Onyekachi Okonta, Idris Korform Wabara, Rt. Rev. Nkechi Udunma Nwosu PhD, Eng. Kalu Nto, Monday Ubani SAN and Chinyere Juliet Okeziem-Nwoko.
These appointees will join the existing statutory members of the council who were announced earlier. The expanded council will now oversee the management and governance of the university.
The appointments, which reflect the Governor’s commitment to enhancing the governance of the state and its institutions, are expected to bring fresh perspectives and expertise to the leadership of ABSU.
The Governor, in his statement, emphasized the importance of fostering a strong and effective university management to ensure the continued growth and development of the institution.
