The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti has approved an extension for the judicial panel of inquiry to further investigate the recovery of government properties, funds, and related issues that remain unaddressed.
The Governor granted the extension on. Saturday October 5, 2024 while receiving the Panel's final report in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South LGA.
Otti expressed his belief that the final report is as comprehensive as the interim one, having received the latter earlier.
However, he mentioned that, due to pending petitions that remain uninvestigated, it is essential to extend the panel’s work rather than prematurely ending their efforts.
The Governor praised the Judicial Panel members for their bravery in overcoming attempts to obstruct their work.
Additionally, he thanked the Panel's Chair, Justice Florence Duruoha Igwe, and her team for their excellent efforts, assuring them that the government would seriously consider and fully implement the report’s recommendations.
”I am committed to all points raised in the report, assuring you of transparency and accountability.
"I assure you that we will take this report seriously and implement it fully.
”We will not ignore any of your recommendations” Otti said.
He further announced that some individuals summoned by the panel, who had unlawfully acquired government property, have begun returning it. He urged others who have not yet complied to do so promptly, warning that the government will take action against those who fail to return what belongs to the state.
He underscored the seriousness of the situation, highlighting the government’s commitment to recovering assets that were unlawfully acquired.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Panel of Inquiry, Justice Florence Duruoha-Igwe, submitted the three-volume report to the Governor.
She noted that the panel received 350 petitions and memoranda and held 99 sessions.
She explained that they were able to address various aspects of their assignment, including markets, land, employment, movable properties, contracts, and other related issues. She urged the Governor to implement the recommendations.
In June 2023, the Governor established a judicial panel of inquiry to recover government properties and funds that were reportedly looted during previous administrations in the state.
Otti listed Justice Florence Ikwuoma Duruoha- Igwe , as the chairman while members include Prof. Ogwo Ekeoma Ogwo, Mazi Ugochukwu Okoroafor, Rev. Fr. Alex Okonkwo and Prof. Ursula Ngozi Akanwa.
