Police, Stakeholders Meet Over Rising Insecurity in Imo State

Authorities of the Imo State Police Command have scheduled a meeting with stakeholders and civil society organizations in a bid to fashion out ways to tackle insecurity in the state.

The meeting will hold on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess in Owerri, the state capital.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, ASP Henry Okoye disclosed this in a statement on Monday, October 14.

According to ASP Okoye, the meeting which is in recognition of the 2024 SERVICOM Week highlights the Command’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of transparency, accountability and community engagement in enhancing security.

He encouraged the public to actively support police efforts in fostering peace and security, stressing that by promoting open communication, the Command seeks to build trust and improve the overall quality of service provided to citizens.

Okoye added; “Recent community feedback has raised concerns about the conduct of a few recalcitrant police officers, including issues of extortion, incivility, and unlawful searching of citizens' phones, particularly targeting youth.

“In response, CP Aboki Danjuma has directed the Command’s Complaint Response Unit (CRU) and the IGP X-Squad Unit to investigate these matters and enhance oversight of officers on duty.

“To enhance accountability, the Commissioner of Police urges the public to report any misconduct by police officers through the dedicated CRU and X-Squad hotlines: 08033424051, 08148024755, 0706 741 9738, and 08103341610.

“This initiative underscores the Command's commitment to maintaining discipline and upholding high professional standards within the police force.

“This meeting represents a vital opportunity for all stakeholders to voice their concerns and contribute to the improvement of policing in Imo State. Together, we can create a safer and more respectful environment for all citizens.

“The Imo State Police Command remains dedicated to enhancing service delivery and upholding the rights and dignity of every individual.

Recall that a group, National Youth Alliance (NYA) has given a seven-day ultimatum to the Joint Taskforce (JTF) in the state to end extortion, harassment and intimidation of youths in the state.

The NYA Chairman, Theodore Chinonso Ubah said the group would be forced to stage a protest rally if after the expiration of the ultimatum, extortion of youths by the JTF continued in the state.
