Reps Raise Alarm Over Increase In Drug Abuse

The House of Representatives under the Committee on Narcotics Drugs has raised concerns over the increasing rate of drug abuse by Nigeria youths and women in the North Central region.


The chairman of the committee, Abass Adigun, who made the concern during the opening session of a two-day North Central National Sensitization Workshop on Narcotics Drugs held in Lafia, Nasarawa State, today Wednesday, the 16th of October, 2024, said the current situation of the region calls for urgent action and rescue for those involved.


Stakeholders in the region have been called upon by the committee to map out effective and proactive steps to handle the growing menace, which posess as a threat to societal stability and order.


Speaking further, he explained that the House of Representatives sponsored a sensitization campaign as a result of the devastating effects of drug abuse on society, especially on youths and women.


In his words, he said: "This workshop is an essential step towards addressing an issue that affects not just individuals but the family, the community, and the nation as a whole"


Speaking on the negative effects of engaging in drug Abuse, the minister stated that it leads to both physical and mental health challenges.


“The effects of narcotics and other harmful substances lead to physical and mental health consequences, disrupt education, and increase the risk of violence and crime in our communities”.


In his remarks, he said the workshop aims to equip stakeholders with the necessary tools needed to fight and prevent drug abuse by the youths and women of the region.


He further pointed out that youths are often exposed to peer pressure, while women face societal issues that make them subscribe to drug abuse.


“Today, we will discuss the causes of drug abuse, explore prevention strategies, and learn about resources available for those in need of support. Prevention is a shared responsibility, and together, we can create an environment that empowers our youths and women to make healthy choices and stay away from drugs" he said.


Minister Adigun also extended hands of appreciation to the Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule and his wife, Silifat Abdullahi-Sule, for their support in ensuring the success of the workshop.
