RIVERS CRISIS: Gov Fubara Urges Peace and Cooperation Amidst Political Tensions

In a heartfelt plea, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to step back and allow him to govern effectively. This appeal comes amid escalating tensions and a protracted political struggle between the two leaders, which has marred the state’s political landscape since Fubara took office.

Speaking during an appearance on National TV Today, Fubara urged all parties involved to “sheathe their swords” and prioritize the state’s wellbeing over personal conflicts. “There is no need to destroy what we should be building,” he stated, reflecting on Wike’s previous tenure, when Rivers State was often regarded as a model for others to emulate.

The governor emphasized the importance of unity, stating, “Wike once ruled, and the state was the envy of every other state. Now that I am in charge, I need his support. After my time in office whether it be four years or eight another person will take over. That is the spirit of governance.”

Fubara’s remarks come in the wake of a local government election held over the weekend without police presence, raising concerns about security and electoral integrity. The governor linked the recent surge in violence in the state, including the burning of two local government secretariats to the ongoing power struggle with Wike. “This conflict has only exacerbated our problems. We’re already facing challenges in Emohua and Degema; we don’t need additional in-house issues complicating governance,” he asserted.

Addressing the broader implications of this political strife, Fubara lamented Nigeria’s declining oil production and the impact it has on the state’s economy. He underscored the need for collaboration, stating, “Now is not the time for division. We must focus on governance, manage our affairs, and protect the lives and properties of our citizens.”

In an emotional appeal, Fubara reiterated his desire for peace, revealing that he has made repeated attempts to convince Wike to help quell the hostility that has emerged. “I have consistently urged my predecessor to allow peace to prevail. It’s essential for the progress of Rivers State that we work together rather than against each other,” he stated.

The call for cooperation and support resonates not only with political leaders but also with the citizens of Rivers State, who are eager for stability and progress. As the governor seeks to focus on governance and address pressing issues, the hope is that both leaders can put aside their differences for the greater good of the state.
